What is a Step-Up SIP?
A Step-Up SIP (also called a Top-Up SIP) is a variation of a regular SIP where you commit to increasing your monthly investment by a fixed percentage each year. For example, if you start with ₹5,000/month and choose a 10% annual step-up, your SIP becomes ₹5,500 in year 2, ₹6,050 in year 3, and so on. This approach aligns your savings with your income growth, substantially boosting your long-term corpus.
How much more does a Step-Up SIP earn vs a regular SIP?
The difference can be dramatic over long periods. A ₹5,000/month flat SIP at 12% for 20 years gives roughly ₹49.9 lakh. The same SIP with a 10% annual step-up yields over ₹1.2 crore — more than double. The higher corpus comes from the compounding of increasingly larger investments in later years.
Can I set up a Step-Up SIP with any mutual fund?
Yes. Most Indian AMCs (Asset Management Companies) and investment platforms support Step-Up SIPs. You can specify the step-up percentage and whether it applies annually or at any other interval. Some platforms also allow a fixed rupee top-up rather than a percentage increase. Check your platform or AMC for specific options.
Is Step-Up SIP suitable for all investors?
Step-Up SIPs work best for investors who expect their income to grow steadily over time — typically salaried professionals. The key benefit is disciplined wealth creation that grows with your earning capacity. If your income is variable or unpredictable, a regular SIP with periodic manual top-ups might offer more flexibility.
